Dawn And Drew - 4/13/2005
I confess I haven't been able to listen to a Dawn And Drew podcast for more than 3 minutes, but I'm impressed by their use of the activeRenderer web service XML-RPC API to produce DNDS show notes.
The public activeRenderer web service being updated to the latest renderering code ( aR 2.5.1 at the time of this writing), you can listen to the podcast directly in the show notes page by clicking the small loudspeaker wedge at the left of the 'MP3 file' paragraph.
Gwénaël Le Dréan - 3/31/2004
Gwénaël Le Dréan demonstrates the first level of localisation achieved in activeRenderer version 2.1 and later (as well he should since he's behind a large part of our common effort towards a fully localised tool :-)
Even if you don't speak French, you will notice his outline carries correctly accented vowels like é è à. Gwénaël also localised the output of the activeRendererFunctions macro with its latest parameters, to display the French mentions 'tout déplier', 'tout replier' instead of the default 'expand all', 'collapse all' in the right side bar.
Gerald Gleason - 3/15/2004
Gerald Gleason doesn't use Radio Userland to publish his weblog. He doesn't use Movable Type either. Yet, look at the navigation lighthouse that forms the left side of the page: you'll recognize a familiar outline structure, with a nautical twist :-)
Gerald has put activeRenderer's javascript code to work, and produced wonderful looking 'nautical' replacements for the 'standard' outline wedges.
With his authorisation, I'll soon include those picts as part of a 'nautical' style for outline wedges. Alternate sets of wedges with specific styles are scheduled to show up in the next 2.2 version of activeRenderer.
Wealth Bondage - 3/8/2004
Philip Cubeta's Wealth Bondage self styled online bordello is packed with interesting links neatly origanized in no less than 3 activeRolls.
Bruce Rides Again - 3/1/2004
A year has passed, and Bruce returns to the gallery with a new trick: publishing activeRolls and outlined weblog posts with activeRenderer and Movable Type!
Although I do not yet support outline publishing with Movable Type, Bruce has forged ahead on his own, with impressive results.
ITU's SPU Newslog - 2/23/2004
The International Telecommunications Union's Strategy and Policy Unit is publishing a news page weblog style, with Radio Userland and activeRenderer.
News A to Z, an activeRoll in the left side pane of the main page, provides a highly structured and easy to navigate map to the site's rich content.
Donovan Watts' Coral Reef Report - 2/16/2004
Donovan uses outlines to structure several pages of his web magazine, such as this reef directory.
This is Donovan's second entry in the Gallery, I guess this makes him the most featured activeRenderist :-)
Clicking the small 'page' wedge at the left of each entry opens the matching web page in a new window.
Collapsed (or hidden) paragraphs are revealed when one hovers the mouse cursor over the 'collapsed' paragraph's wedge.
thomas n. burg | randgänge - 2/9/2004
Thomas uses an active roll full of transcluding links on his randgänge site.
Clicking one of the small 'up-arrow' icons at the left of an item expands the linked outline in place.
The main blogroll is an OPML outline. Each linked level is maintained in a separate OPML outline. Those linked outlines may be published by the same author, from the same computer, or by a different person on a separate system, depending on the link specified within the master outline.
Katy And Bruce Loebrich - 3/11/2003
Katy and Bruce's weblog makes use of activeRenderer both for outlining blog dates and post titles, and for displaying an 'active' blogroll in the right sidebar.
Bruce's activeRoll displays some cleverly crafted entries. The first one has a regular HTML link, plus a link to its RSS version around a tiny xml logo. The second one is even more complex.
The outline node in the original OPML version has a link attached to Katy's blogroll - clicking the up arrow wedge will expand Katy's blogroll into the activeRoll, plus a regular HTML link to the same OPML blogroll around 'Katy', a link to Katy's weblog page around 'Link', and a link around the RSS version of Katy's weblog around RSS.
David Soul's Weblog - 3/5/2003
David shows another fine example of activeRenderer's 'extreme' or advanced weblog outline style.
Posts for the latest day are fully expanded, whereas only post titles are listed for the previous days. Expanding any of the collapsed titles reveals the complete post.
Thought?Horizon :: Web Links - 2/28/2003
David Buchan publishes a directory of knowledge management Web resources, with the same crisp layout than in his thought?horizon weblog.
The main menu for his weblog is an activeRoll. Links are symbolized by 'page' wedges instead of regular HTML hypertext, since David has the #flDisplayHTMLWedge directive set to true in the #prefs.txt preferences file that applies to his directory (the one located in his outlines folder).
Paolo Valdemarin's Test Outline - 2/26/2003
This is an 'historical' exhibit in the gallery, since this probably was the first outline rendered on the Web with activeRenderer by its first user besides myself :-)
Paolo created the outline to demonstrate the added value of embedding HTML styling inside OPML outline nodes. In this outline, 'thinking' is bracketed by b and /b HTML tags, while 'reading' is bracketed by i and /i tags.
Colors are created by using the font tag with the 'color' attribute.
Ernie Svenson's Law Blawgs - 2/24/2003
Ernie the Attorney is publishing a directory of Law related sites. He's told me it 'has become a great resource for lawyers who want to find other lawyer bloggers'. Lawers are natural outliners of course :-)
Donovan's Coral Reef Directory - 2/22/2003
Donovan Watts is publishing an online directory full of information on the world's coral reefs, their inhabitants, and the dangers they're facing.
All the links in his directory are rendered as small 'page icon' wedges, aR's default for outline nodes with HTML links attached. They would have been rendered as regular HTML links had Donovan decided to include an #flDisplayHTMLWedge "false" directive at the top of his outline, or in the #prefs.txt file located in the same folder as his OPML outline.
The Endless Web Page - 2/21/2003
My own Endless Web Page is back by popular demand :-) It's an outline that actually transcludes into itself. Clicking the up arrow wedge on 'the endless web page' node inserts the whole outline into the node.
Notice the image attached to the first node. It's automatically resized according to the width of its parent node.
Salvation's Army Edmonton Temple, Alberta - 2/19/2003
I strongly suspect Ian McKenzie of being the author of this superb layout, which makes excellent use of two activerolls, one for a site map, the other for an events calendar.
Lord of the Rings Quiz - 2/19/2003
Mark Griffin found an innovative use for web outlines: a terrific quiz for 'all Lord of the Rings fanatics' (sic). Mark currently holds the record in the 'largest outline published so far' category.
To find out if you are right answer for each question, choose one of the possible answers and expand its node.
Mikel Maron's Brain Off - 2/17/2003
Eating his own dog food, Mikel reads his RSS news feeds in myRadio's aggregator module, and exports his subscriptions in a dedicated mySubscriptionsMyRadio.opml outlines in www\gems.
He publishes his subscriptions in an active blogroll using this macro:
%activeRoll ("file:\///C/Program%20files/Radio%20UserLand/www/gems/mySubscriptionsMyRadio.opml")%
Matt Mower's Topics Index - 2/17/2003
As becomes the author of liveTopics, Matt publishes a multi-page index of the topics related to his weblog posts. Each topic is a summit node in the page's outline, with as many children as there are titles of weblog entries related to that topic.
Clicking on the title takes you straight to the weblog's entry. Each entry may be related to several topics. Alternate topics are listed as childrens of the title.
Windley's Enterprise Computing Weblog - 2/14/2003
Phillip uses a cleverly devised activeRoll to display links to his weblog's monthly archives. He also publishes an activeRoll of Utah personnalities, in the style of Jon's CxO bloggers.
The archive activeRoll is a simple 2 levels OPML outline, with a summit node for each year, and as many children nodes per summit as there are archived monthes in the year. Each month has the URL to the published Radio HTML monthly archive attached as a link/url attribute pair (type cmd-k or ctl-k after selecting the node in Radio's outliner).
Rory Perry's West Virginia Supreme Court Opinions - 2/14/2003
Thanks to Rory, the West Virginia Supreme Court publishes its opinions in outline form :-) Outlines have always been popular with lawyers, they are ideal for presenting intricate legal opinions in a simple way.
Rory has done a great job of customizing activeRenderer's default CSS stylesheet and template to better fit the overall style of the Supreme Court's site.
Adam Curry's Rundown - 2/13/2003
Adam uses the default activeRenderer template to publish his 'Fucked up shit met je XDA' outline. Since my Dutch his pretty thin, I can only guess at what he really means...
The reader can click on the 'expand all' and 'collapse all' links in the left sidebar to expand the whole outline at once, or to shrink it to it summit nodes.
Howard Greenstein's Weblog - 2/13/2003
Howard uses a slightly modified 'Adult Contemporary' Radio themes, and as activated activeRenderer's basic outline style on activeRenderer's preferences page.
This way, only the dates headings are outlined on his page. The latest day is expanded, the past days are collapsed. The reader can switch days using the 'Latest' widget on the right side.
Jon's Radio - 2/12/2003
Jon has recently overhauled his weblog with a brand new InfoWorld template. In the right pane of his weblog, below the Google box (cut out in the sample screenshot), he publishes 2 different active blogrolls by inserting 2 activeRoll macro calls in his template.
By clicking on the wedges in his 'Strategic Developer' and 'CxO Bloggers' rolls, his readers can reveal additional information about each outlined entry. All entries are collapsed by default, preserving precious screen real estate.
Joi Ito's Radio Outline - 2/12/2003
Joi uses Radio's default weblog template, and has activated activeRenderer's extreme outline style on activeRenderer's preferences page. This way, each date in his weblog is rendered as an outline summit, and so are all of his blog entries titles.
By clicking in the 'Latest' widget in the right pane, his readers can select which day to fully expand. Entries for other days are collapsed, revealing only the entry's title.
